What is Radiator & Central Heating Balancing?

Balancing radiators involves adjusting valves to ensure uniform heating. It's distinct from bleeding, which releases trapped air from radiators. Cold spots at the top indicate a need for bleeding, while those at the bottom suggest sludge buildup.

Tools You'll Need

  • Radiator bleeding key
  • Lockshield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner or a PlumbShark works perfectly, get one here! 
  • Screwdriver
  • Digital thermometer or multimeter with a thermometer function (optional)

Step-by-Step Balancing Guide

  1. Turn the Heating Off: Ensure your heating is off. Bleed and possibly power flush your radiators first.
  2. Open All Radiator Valves: Fully open all thermostatic radiator valves, or ensure lockshields are open.
  3. Monitor Heating Up Process: Note the sequence in which radiators heat up after turning the heating on.
  4. Turn the Central Heating Off Again: This step is necessary for effective balancing.
  5. Adjust the Fastest-Heating Radiator: Slightly reopen the closed lockshield valve.
  6. Record Temperature and Adjust: Achieve a 12°C difference between two ends of the radiator.
  7. Repeat for Other Radiators: Balance each radiator in the sequence they heated up.

Q: What if radiators are still unbalanced?
A: Sludge or a weak pump might be the cause. Consider a power flush or consulting a Gas Safe engineer.

Q: I still have 1 or more radiator not coming on. 

It could be due to the above but sometimes it just that radiators have been added on to the circuit and the pipe runs are too small to support the additional heat demand from the extra radiators, usually we see this in extensions & conservatories.
